Hunters Hall Phase 4, Edinburgh, for Hunters Hall Housing Co-operative

ARCADE were invited to make proposals for this phase of the regeneration of the Niddrie House Estate.

The central issue was the development of a clear strategy for this phase of the work to the area which recognised and enhanced previous phases in addition to addressing the more general principles of development.

Management of vehicular traffic and the creation of a balanced housing mix were specific issues addressed by this project.

The proposals involved radical ‘surgery’ to the existing buildings so as to redefine territory, the design of new buildings in strategic locations, and conversions to provide a variety of different housing types. This also involved careful consideration of the threshold between public and private space.
