Housing (Plot H) Holyrood (North Site), Edinburgh For Old Town Housing Association Ltd

This competition project was to provide residential accommodation for Old Town Housing Association on a prominent site within the Masterplan for Holyrood (North), adjacent to the site for the new Parliament. The housing abutted an existing brick industrial building which ARCADE proposed should be converted to offices, and on either side of the site there were narrow closes typical of the Old Town.

ARCADE's proposal was to arrange the 35 flats around a central covered courtyard which linked to the close network at ground level. The exterior of the building was conceived as a series of overlapping timber planes with projecting bay windows at the overlaps to allow each flat to enjoy the spectacular prospect to the south towards Salisbury Crags and Arthur Seat.

Parking was located in a basement plinth on top of which sat a cafe overlooking the Scottish Poetry Library immediately to the east.
